When Mrs. Rabbit warns her four children to stay away from Mr. McGregor's garden—where their father met his end in a pie—three of them obediently gather blackberries. But Peter, irrepressible and hungry, squeezes under the garden gate and feasts until he comes face to face with the furious gardener. What follows is a breathless chase across cabbages and cucumber frames, through a tool shed and past a menacing cat, as Peter desperately searches for the way out. He escapes with his life but loses his new jacket and shoes—and pays for his adventure with a miserable evening in bed, dosed with camomile tea, while his siblings enjoy bread and blackberries.
