Tyltyl and Mytyl, two humble siblings, are visited by the Fairy Bérylune on Christmas Eve. She gives Tyltyl a magic hat with a diamond that reveals the souls of all things and sends them on a quest to find the Blue Bird of Happiness for her ailing daughter. Guided by Light and accompanied by the personified souls of their Dog, Cat, Bread, Sugar, Water, and Fire, the children journey through fantastical realms like the Land of Memory, the Palace of Night, and the Kingdom of the Future. They face treachery, confront their fears, and repeatedly glimpse the elusive Blue Bird, only to see it slip away. After a year of adventures, they awaken to find their quest was a dream—but when Tyltyl selflessly gives his pet dove to a sick neighbor, he sees it has transformed into the true Blue Bird, learning that happiness was always at home, waiting to be shared.
